Think Global | Act Local Through Community Service
According to many colleges, students who engage in community service provides the student with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Community service or volunteerism also enables students to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most.
What is the benefit of community service? The personal gain of teens volunteering helps them develop an increased sense of social responsibility. The old saying we love is “Think globally, act locally.” When teens have a global viewpoint of society, they develop a heart for “giving back” and helping others. Plus, community service exposes teens to diversity, multiculturalism and a chance to apply academic knowledge to real human needs.
If it were not for volunteers, our parks and beaches would be dirtier. Struggling children would struggle more without the help of volunteer tutors and mentors. Of course, doing 8 hours of community service as part of 757 Senior Palooza isn’t drastically changing the world, but your service will impact the lives of others.
Community Service Adds Up!
Let’s look at the simple math of how we can help others with only 8 hours of community service. If we can book all 40 portrait sessions, that is a minimum of 320 hours of community service. Imagine if your senior brings a friend or a parent, then we just doubled our community support to 640 hours. When we work together and do our small part, that adds up to a tremendous amount of time helping our community.
The reason we break up the community service time is to spread our service to a variety of opportunities. We have contacted VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads to help us organize and find the best opportunities that will impact our community the most. Our goal is to help non-profits deliver their services and achieve their mission.
Our goal at 757 Senior Palooza is to build leaders while having fun! It is crucial that we work together to help benefit our community because budgets for non-profits are tight and without volunteers, many non-profits are not able to sustain their ability to serve the community.
